Arahant

A person who has attained full enlightenment and will not be reborn ever again.

Bhikkhu

A fully ordained Buddhist monk.

Bhikkhuni

A fully ordained Buddhist nun.

lay person

Also lay man/lay woman. A disciple of the Buddha who lives following the Five Precepts and from time to time observes the Eight Precepts. Lay people live at home, possibly with a family. They lead in many ways an ordinary life, unlike monks and nuns.

samsara

(pronounced sang-sara) the beginningless cycle of birth and death in the various worlds (human, heavenly, animal, ghost, and hell worlds). The cycle of samsara is only ended by attaining enlightenment.

Sinhala

One of the languages of Sri Lanka. Most of the monks here speak Sinhala as well as English.

Theravada

The oldest tradition of Buddhism that preserves the original teachings of Gautama Buddha.
